In the break room, Richard mentions an upcoming boat trip that he wants to take with Therese. As they head to the floor, every employee is handed a Santa hat and told it's a gift from their employer. She rides tandem on his bicycle to the Frankenberg Department Store where they both work. In the flashback, it is New York City of December 1952, Therese is picked up at home by her boyfriend, Richard. In the cab, Therese sees Carol walking down the sidewalk and flashes back to a day months earlier, when Therese is working at a department store, wearing a red Santa hat, transfixed on something in the distance. Jack suggests Therese and he share a ride to their mutual friend's party. She says her goodbye to Therese, squeezing her shoulder. Upon Jack's entrance, Carol excuses herself from the table, saying she has an event to attend to. A man named Jack enters a nice restaurant and spots his friend Therese (Rooney Mara) who is seated across from a pretty blonde woman (Cate Blanchett), who is introduced as Carol. The story happens in the 50s in New York and is somewhat avant garde for its time. The movie begins with various shots of New York in the early 1950's.

Other than the couples Therese-Carol and Carol-Abby, there is no other homosexual characters and no characters of colour.

Richard keeps repeating to Therese that she is juste going through a phase, that she will come to her senses and that he will wait for her out of generousity. In the book, this homophobia is viewed through the eyesof a man. Obvisously, there is a lot of hate towards homosexuality.

The most developed character is, ironically, Richard, who’s Therese’s date, and he is still very one-dimensional in the sense that his reactions are very predictable and he has very few characteristics of his own. Carol is mainly characterized by the fact that she is beautiful, blond, rich, in love with Therese, and that she has a child and an ex-husband. Her main characteristics are being young, being an intern as a theatre set designer and being in love with Carol. We still perceive a certain influence from its era.Īlthough Therese is the main character, she isn’t very well developed. This novel is one of the first ones tackling romantic relations between two women.
